25 Brazilian students have received full scholarships to spend one semester studying abroad in Portugal, improving their global competence and academic records through a program facilitated by AFS Brazil and AFS Portugal. This program called “Gira Mundo” (“Spin the World”) is fully sponsored by the Brazilian Paraiba Secretary of Education and it aligns with the new Portuguese national strategy for citizenship education.

During their program in Portugal, students will start working on individual projects related to citizenship, differences and similarities between the cultures of Brazil and Portugal, the environment, globalization, economy, social impact and other topics. These projects will be implemented in the students’ home communities upon their return to Brazil.

“I’m excited about this experience, I want to broaden my horizons. I would like to take this opportunity to show to Portuguese people what Brazilians are like and break stereotypes that might exist about Brazilians,” says Francisco, a Gira Mundo participant.
